Professor Michael Barber

Professor Michael Barber started his academic career as a Queen Elizabeth II Fellow at the Australian National University’s Department of Applied Mathematics. He spent a decade from 1974 as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in applied mathematics at the University of New South Wales.

In 1984, Professor Barber was appointed Professor of Mathematics at Australian National University where, in 1990, he became Dean of the Faculty of Science. Professor Barber was appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of Western Australia in 1994, a position he held until 2002.

In 2002, Professor Barber broadened his experience by taking up the position of Executive Director, Science Planning at Australia’s premier research organisation, the CSIRO. Four years later, he was appointed Group Executive, Information, Manufacturing and Minerals – and was then appointed Vice-Chancellor at Flinders University.
