Jamaluddin Jompa is a Professor in Marine Ecology at Hasanuddin University, with considerable experience in both research and management aspects of coastal and marine ecosystems with an emphasis on sustainable and multidisciplinary approaches. He has written a number of international publications and books in collaboration with international researchers and organizations.

He is an alumnus of McMaster University, Canada (M.Sc.) and James Cook University, Australia (Ph.D.) with well over 100 scientific and popular publications. Professor Jompa currently serves as the Rector of Hasanuddin University and the Chairman of the Center of Excellence for Marine Resilience and Sustainable Development.

During his career, Professor Jompa has held a number of strategic positions, such as; Director of the Research and Development Center for Marine, Coastal and Small Islands of Hasanuddin University, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Group for the National Coordinating Committee of Coral Triangle Initiative, Board Member of Coral Triangle Center, Member of the National Commission on Fisheries Stock Assessment, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. He served as the first President of the Indonesian Young Academy of Sciences and was elected to the prestigious Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI) in 2021. He also holds the title of the Pew Fellows for Marine Conservation Project 2019, granted by The Pew Charitable Trusts.
