An International Symposium

This symposium will explore what we know about the historic relationship between the fishers from Makassar and the Yolngu groups of northern Australia and how this relationship has been explored in artistic partnerships in the past.

We then want to build on the connections, learnings and partnerships and take them in new directions through the medium and language of contemporary art.

The symposium is part of the first meeting of Makassar and Yolngu artists involved in an new Australia-Indonesia Centre art-exchange project. Project partners include the Wilin Centre at the Victorian College of the Arts, Yirrkala Art Centre in northeast Arnhem Land and Universitas Hasanuddin and Rumata’ Artspace in Makassar.
