Designing a nursing industry pilot project

Knowledge sharing and mobility between Indonesia and Australia

Jakarta, August 2025

The ambition to develop a career pathway for Indonesian nurses wishing to further their skills in Australia has taken another step following a meeting of industry leaders from both countries.

Representatives from the nursing regulatory, training, union and university sectors from both countries attended a two day event in Jakarta to discuss the requirements for a model of work placement and skills exchange.

The industry leaders have been convened by the Australia-Indonesia Centre to design a pilot project which would ensure the support, training and placement of Indonesian nurses seeking global experience. This model would also broaden Australian cultural capability of one of the country’s closest neighbours.

It’s envisaged that the nurses could also help ease workforce gaps in some parts of Australia, such as regional communities.

Commissioned by the government-backed economic cooperation program Katalis, the project follows the AIC’s earlier work with an expert group on market access and standards equivalence. This led to a comprehensive and comparative map on standards and training between the two countries.

The AIC has utilised its extensive network to set up the research advisory panel which is co-led by two leading institutions, Monash University Australia and Universitas Indonesia.

The expert panel will reconvene in Melbourne in mid-September to follow-up on the work done and progress the pilot design.
